There are two major routes you can take.
1) Fill your own ink cartridges, this can save over 90%. It can be done three different ways:
- Refill the original canon cartridges.
- Get refillable ink cartridges and attach your original ink chips to them.
- Get refillable ink cartridges complete with auto reset chips.
2) Buy compatible ink cartridges with or without chips.
What you need to know to do these things successfully without interrupting your print quality or clogging your print head.
If you decide to fill your own ink cartridges.
- It is imperative that you purchase quality ink.
- That you are aware that ink has a shelf life of between two and three years.
- That you choose the type of ink that is suited to your printing needs.
- That you purchase from a company that has good customer service in case you need help.
What is quality ink?
Canon ink has a standard of quality that many companies have matched or may have slightly exceeded.
The ink company must first meet the ISO standard for cleanliness. So an ISO rating is important and good ink products always feature this.
Wide gamut ink is ink which has a wider spectrum of color depth. So look for this as well.
All quality ink includes UV protection, but not all UV ink is wide gamut.

How these Auto Reset Chips work:
These chips will automatically reset themselves every time you either take them out of your printer or you turn your printer off & on again. When they read full, they actually read 90%. When they read empty, your cartridge will be very close to empty. If your print monitor says one of your cartridges is empty, when you go to refill it, the manufacturer suggests you follow one of the following steps toassure the chips work perfectly:

- Take all the cartridges out at this time and refill all of them, then put them back in.
- Refill the one empty cartridge, then turn off the printer and turn it back on again, thus resetting all the chips at once.
- Take out all the cartridges, fill the one empty one, then put them all back in the printer, thus resetting all the chips at once.
Because to get the best performance you need to reset all the chips at the same time, it is still okay if some of the cartridges are only partially full. What will happen is at first the printer will see them as all 90% full, then as you print a couple of pages, they ink monitor will catch on to what is really in each tank.
